Ingrid Halvorsen
Partner, Private Wealth
Ingrid builds succession and estate structures for founders and families, and litigates them when the family cannot agree.
Background
Ingrid chairs the private wealth practice. She advises founders, closely held businesses and multi-generational families on estate planning, business succession, trust administration and philanthropy, and represents trustees and beneficiaries in fiduciary disputes.
Her work concentrates on the eighteen months before a liquidity event, when a transfer is still cheap and a family is still willing to talk about what happens afterwards. She has completed pre-transaction planning for founders ahead of sales from $40 million to $600 million, and has spent enough time in contested accountings to know exactly which drafting choices produce them.
She is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and has served on the Chicago Bar Association trust law committee since 2015.
Selected matters.
- Structured a pre-transaction gifting plan for a founding family ahead of a $600 million sale, completed nine months before signing.
- Advised trustees of a four-generation family trust through a situs change and partial decanting.
- Resolved a contested accounting between siblings without a public filing.
Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
